PhD: Dynamics of Respectful Design in Co-Creative and Co-Reflective encounters with Indigenous Communities

Description

During my PhD studies at Northumbria University, I explored how designers can engage in ‘respectful’ design projects with Indigenous communities. Respectful refers to making the project beneficial for the participating community, sparking resourcefulness of community members for them to become designers of their own future and acknowledging their indigenous knowledge. This approach has the potential to result in a sense of ownership and responsibility taking of the community. I engaged in co-creative encounters with three Malaysian Indigenous communities. One of them became interested to engage further. They decided they wanted to design an exhibition to present who they are to other cultures.
